Intergenerational Trauma/ Trauma

Some things in life stick with us even when we don’t want them to. Trauma and Intergenerational Trauma can take many forms and impact people in a variety of ways.

What is Trauma?

Trauma is a complex psychological response to an event that is deeply distressing or disturbing. It can result from a single event or ongoing stressors, overwhelming an individual's coping ability. Symptoms of trauma can vary widely and may include flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and difficulty regulating emotions. At times, the emotional and psychological wounds from past traumatic experiences can often manifest within interpersonal connections. Individuals who have experienced trauma may struggle with trust, intimacy, communication, and emotional regulation in their relationships.

Intergenerational Trauma: Do you envision yourself breaking generational curses?

In some families and communities, you are taught that what happens in the home stays in the home, and that “putting our business in the streets” isn’t helpful. While this adage might have been “true” in previous generations, we know the harm that some “business” can have on the entire family unit or individually.

Intergenerational trauma refers to the transference of traumatic experiences and their effects across generations within a family or community. Traumatic events, such as war or systemic oppression, can leave a profound imprint on one’s mental health, altering one's thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. This trauma can be carried forward and expressed in various ways, including behavioral patterns, communication styles, and relational dynamics.

By understanding and addressing trauma and/or intergenerational trauma, we can begin to break the cycle and promote healing for both present and future generations.
